Have you ever felt the need to release pent up emotion? Personally, I don't really show much emotion because I am preoccupied trying to make everyone else is happy before I even worry about myself. So, what I do instead of taking my emotions out on people, I do what most call, “vent art”.
Vent art is often associated with depression or anger. For some people, they can be very graphic. But for me, it’s nothing like that. I don’t take it to extremes; I just draw what I feel. That’s really all it is – drawing your emotions. However it has a negative connotation. As defined here, it means, “To express (one's thoughts or feelings)”. Ergo, it can be happy, sad, angry, etc.… Not just awful and depressing.

An example of "traditional" vent art is shown here. It is a character of mine. The piece is called "Shattered". The title kind of speaks for itself. Basically, she is looking in a mirror. It splits down the center showing what she sees compared to what others see. She is slowly chipping away and breaking down, missing more of herself each day. |
Venting can also be done through making videos. Shown below is one that I made a while ago.
It is intended to evoke emotion in the audience as well as a sense of longing and desire to be accepted.
This message is clearer at the end, when the antagonist is seemingly telling the protagonist what the protagonist had originally told the antagonist.

Another common form of vent art is poetry.
Everyone knows this one:
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
I love you.
What do you think its author was feeling when they wrote it? It's pretty simple to tell, don't you think?
Poetry can be done about sad occurrences such as death like the one below (I do not own this):

Or it can be about things you appreciate about life.

Or it can even be like this one (I do not own this):
What do you think this person was trying to say? Again, it’s pretty self-explanatory, right?
That's because that is how vent art works. The creator feels something so strong that it transfers into their work.
Have you ever listened to song lyrics? They are basically poems set to time and music. For example, listen to this song and try to tell what the artist was feeling when they wrote it. (I do not own this)

How did you feel during the song? That’s probably how they felt too. It's amazing how emotions can be conveyed through something so simple, yet so deep. Don’t you think?
Regardless, no matter what form it is represented in, vent art helps to, well, vent. That is its purpose.
...obviously...
Vent art helps to let people say what they cannot physically say. It is a way for them to get their thoughts out even if there is no one around to talk to them. They can express their message without having to tell anyone in their own unique way.
Try drawing or expressing your emotions in a form of art sometime. Maybe you’ll find that it is a good outlet for you. It is a good way to let go and be you.
