"Why do I choose art over other activities?" and "What is the purpose of art?"
I find that I do art because I like it. It gives me purpose. In a cycle, I give purpose to the paper and the paper transforms into art, thus giving me purpose in return.
But some might think that art doesn’t have a purpose. However, that is not the case. Art is a form of self-expression. As stated in my previous blogs, art is a good tool for venting emotions.
Art is one of the best forms of self–expression.
Why?
Well, in all honesty, that’s just my personal opinion. I think that art - should it be drawing, painting, writing, filmmaking, etc. - helps to free the soul and the mind.

I know that it sounds corny, but it’s true. I’ll be brutally honest here, if you find that hard to swallow, I’m not making you read this, it’s entirely your choice.
Which is another great purpose of art – it gives you choices and individuality.
Art gives you freedom; a type of freedom that you can’t get in many other places.

Art alone can free one’s mind.
It allows thoughts to flow from the mind without a second thought. It gives you the ability to be free. Art doesn’t have rules. There are only the stereotypes of what is good and what is not.
If it doesn’t turn out quite like you wanted, you can simply start over.

Above is another comparison much like the one on my previous blog. It shows improvement and ability to grow from mistakes.
That’s one of the coolest things about art; it’s not supposed to be perfect. It’s simply meant to be unique. Something that people can look at and possibly even envy.
Another one of the best points of art is that there are levels of progression. No matter what form of art you choose to do, you will always improve.

But anyways, back to its purpose.
There are many things one could say is the purpose of art. And that’s the beauty of art; it is different for everyone. There is no set or desired purpose craved by others. It is up to you what the arts’ purpose is.
How great is that?
Below are some great quotes from some well known people:
An artist has one of the most powerful impacts on society.

- "If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." - Vincent Van Gogh
- "No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist." - Oscar Wilde
- "The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance." - Aristotle
- "If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him." - John F. Kennedy

Just look at the films that audiences sit so captivatedly to watch or the galleries and museums dedicated to influential artists of the past.

Imagine how bland the world would be
How boring would life be ?
What inventions would’ve never come to exist ? What people would not have existed ? How would it impact your life now?
Take Eadweard Muybridge for example. (his work is stated next and a video is below as well)
Had he not been creative and inventive with his photographs and use of a fast camera shutter and used a specific photographic process, dramatically reducing exposure time and producing crisp images of moving objects, what would've happened?
Below is his experiment with multiple still images played in a row to show movement. (not my clip)

Where do you think cinema would be if this hadn’t been discovered or attempted?
Without the creativity of art, there would be less advances within our society. It plays a much bigger role than any of us realize.
Ar t has such a great impact on all of us, whether we know it or not.
